Last night I had an awesome dream in which I got hit on by a very hot cop and kinda sorta complimented on how I could still pass for "Under 21" because she was really surprised my license didn't have the extra "Will Turn 21 on____" line on it.

Okay, so I had also been pulled over for running a stop sign on my way to the clinic of all places (as to why I was in such a hurry to get to the clinic, I have no clue. I think I was there to set up an appointment or something, and I almost got kicked out because they were having a soup kitchen on the first floor and only Financially Challenged types were allowed... Really, I only wanted to ask which floor Allergy was on, did the crabby woman setting tables *really* need to snap at me - twice! - to get out?), which is why the pretty cop was looking at my license in the first place, and she didn't really hit on me, but her super cute partner did! He asked me out, actually, and because this was DreamMaren and not RealLife(chickenshit)Maren, I actually agreed!

And then I woke up. Damn.

Journalings on how I percieve beauty

It also gets a tiny bit Emo - less in the "Woe is me!" and more in the "Arrgh, BITE ME" department, so seriously, you might want to ignore this. I decided not to lock it to "Private" only because this way I can pretend I'm ranting to a sympathetic audience - or not sympathetic, whatever - and not really just talking to myself. Seriously, I won't feel bad if you ignore it, because it's very self-centered.

I'll even hide it under a cut )

Actually, now that the words have been purged a bit, I don't know if I really feel better or just more shallow and self-centered.

Girls Night last weekend in Appleton was a blast. Only Mandy and Beth made it, but they were the two I wanted to see and catch up with the most, so I was more than happy with the turn out. Found a new polyester swim suit on sale for $55 down from $80, and I'm all "Yay!" about that because the blue one I had been wearing has seen at least a year of hard use and I was just waiting for some seam to rip or something during swim lessons - not a nice thought considering it was the only one I had until I got the new one (well, two - I got an Ugly a week or two before in Stevens Point, but still). Also found a pair of new shoes on sale for $95 down from $120.

We also helped Mandy find a nice interview outfit, I tried on a goofy dress I wouldn't be caught dead in just for the hell of it, and generally just had a fun time wandering around the mall window shopping. Beth did manage to convince me to spend $40 on makeup, but I figure the lip pencil will last me the rest of my life - possibly even longer considering how rarely I wear makeup - so it should be worth it in the end.

Next up was glaming ourselves up and dinner at Olive Garden; I wore a skirt sexy boots *and* makeup - would've attempted to do my hair, too, especially as it was kind of behaving all blah-like anyway, but we ran out of prep time (hey, by the time we left the mall, we only had 45 minutes left to get to the hotel, change, and get back to the other side of the mall area to Olive Garden, so all things considered, I think we did pretty well), so it was just... blah. Managed to leave it down for maybe forty minutes before pulling it back into my more typical messy bun.

Then we spent a half hour or so at a salsa bar and shared a really tasty margarita before hitting Skyline Comedy Club for the 10pm show. I didn't find the two opening acts all that amusing, but the headliner, Nick Vatterott had me chuckling quite a few times. The line about being high as a kite and checking the time, only to see "End" on his microwave clock had all three of us rolling. And being the wild child I am, my two drink minimum consisted of a rootbeer and a decaf coffee. Am I bad, or am I bad? ;)

After the comedy show it was back to my hotel room, where we spent an additional hour or two jabbering before I shooed them both out and home as they still had to drive a bit and by this point it was 2 am on a Saturday night/Sunday morning. I showered and was in bed by three, where I maybe got two hours of sleep and I was up again by 8:00 because I am a glutton for punishment. Still made it home it one piece, though, and it was an awesome night and I'm super glad I set it up. I cringe every time I think about how much money I spent, but every penny was so totally worth it for the chance to catch up with Mandy and Beth again.

Also, spent New Years Eve with Emmies. We ate at El Mez, had a Disney Movie Marathon (Sorcerer's Apprentice and Tangled), and then I stayed up until 3 with her watching the Batman television series from the 60s. Then I drove home the next day on two or three hours of sleep with a snow storm doing it's damndest to blow me off the road. Thankfully it did not succeed and I made it home all in one piece. :)

Happy Holidays!

Season's Greetings Everyone!

Spent Christmas Day at my aunt Sue's where I ate entirely too much, caught up with the cousins, watched home movies from when we were all wee and small, snuggled the puppy dog, and spent an hour or two playing Wii Sports with my brother Ben and two of the four cousins who were there. Got second place in our bowling match with 120-something, hurray me!

Got home right around dark and proceeded to try very hard not to fall asleep in front of the Packer/Bears game. Managed to make it until 10 pm, at which point I gave in to Morpheus and fell asleep probably within ten minutes of lying down. I figure I wouldn't miss much as it was something like 35-10 Packers and only 5 minutes or so left on the clock when I conked out. Also, at the risk of sounding like a bad Wisconsinite, I really don't much care how well the Packers are doing these days, I mostly just put the game on to kill some time. Shhhhh, don't tell any of my local friends. ;)

SG1, SGA, White Collar, Dr. Who, and Vorkosigan recs

So I've figured out how to cross post from here to LJ, but not from LJ to here. So I do apologize if there is any sort of double posting.

That said, fic recs! A whole bunch of them all at once because I lack the patience to do them one by one today. And dude, there are like twenty of them here.

Stargate SG-1
Aggravated Destruction of Property by Kalquessa. JONAS AND VALA. TOGETHER. IN A JAIL CELL. Nuff said. Happy fic that makes me happy.

Nocturne by purple shrub. I can't actually remember what happens in this one, so I'm mooching the authors note and summary. SPOILERS : Hmm…this takes place both 1st season, before Fire and Water, and 7th season, post Fallen. I’m told familiarity with Meridian is needed to understand it.
SUMMARY : Teal’c/Daniel friendship

Wherever We Go by gingasaur. "You should just write about Jonas and Vala going on a picnic." She was joking. And yet here we are. In which Jonas is trying to be angry and wallow in self pity in peace, but Vala won't let him.

Stargate Atlantis
Walk Beside Me by Rachel500. When a diplomatic mission is interrupted by the Wraith, Sam and Teyla wrestle their personal demons to work together and find a way back to Atlantis. In other words, Sam and Teyla being awesome and bad ass. And oh, hey, bonding a bit along the way, too.

Dr. Who
The Tragic Demise of the Psychic Paper by alsodinosaurs. Title pretty much covers it. Fluff.

well, you know by roachpatrol. Series 1 AU, It is July in New New York, 099: the dawning of the latest and greatest era of beauty, freedom, truth and love, but mostly love. And when it comes to Rose Tyler and Jack Harkness, a lot of beauty. John Smith is so hopelessly in love with his two best friends that sometimes he thinks he could just about explode. But he's no one special. Not really. Lyrical and slightly melancholy, but lovely in it's own way.

Handyman by pluto. Donna is breaking. Shaun can't help but try and help fix her.

White Collar
A Wake-up Call a Mean Ragout by china-shop. Another one I can't recall much of what happened, but there is Neal being sneaky and Peter being oblivious. And El making a mean ragout.

No, and here's a dozen reasons why by china-shop. Peter on why it would be a Bad Idea, but who is tempted to take the risk anyway.

Nothing Says 'Feel Better Soon' Like Grand Theft Larceny by OnYourMark. On why you do NOT mess with Elizabeth Burk, because "dirty" doesn't even scratch the surface when Neal Caffrey really wants to play ball.

Strays by sahiya. Neal and some kittens. Yes, KITTENS. And NEAL. I'm not sure it is possible to get any more adorable than that. Fluff of the fluffiest.

Vorkosigan Saga
The Stuff That Dreams by dsudis. Bad dreams and having someone to hold onto.

Vorkosigan Sousleau by Philomytha. "I freely admit that I don't know much about boats," Cordelia said, treading water, "but I'm pretty sure the sail is supposed to be pointing up." Aral and Cordelia fluff

Crossovers
Here Tomorrow, Gone Today by Tari Roo. SGA/SPN Crossover AU. One shot. The world ended and not how any hunter would have imagined. A BSG-style fleet of refugees on the run, with Dean Winchester aboard the Hammond. Shep POV.

Quick Like a Bunny by innie-darling. Sherlock/Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. I kid you not. Nuff said.

And stick a fork in me, I'm done.

So LJ changing the comment feature is what finally sent me running for dreamwidth. Still not sure how often I'll use it, but I do have one or the other of them set to cross post, so there should be some sort of update on occasion.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Dinner at El Mezcal on Sunday with Kristin, followed by a walk through the park where I FINALLY got to see the Rotary Club's Winter Wonderland/Festival of Light or whatever even though they've been doing one every year for the last five or six. 1,000,000 lights this year!

Star Trek Reboot - With My Feet Toward the Stars

I am way behind on my fic recs and I think I have at least ten to post from the last few months, but not tonight because my head hurts something fierce.

So we'll start with the one I just finished and leave it at that for now. With My Feet Toward the Stars (let me remember you as you were when you existed) by Rinsbane. Lovely and beautiful and lyrical, fractured and bittersweet. At age five, Spock informs his mother that it is illogical to wish him “sweet dreams” at bedtime because Vulcans do not dream. “Oh, Spock,” she says.

The Enterprise becomes sentient, and Spock is the only one who can hear her. The story jumps around a lot, and I don't recommend reading it with a headache, but it is definitely worth it.

Hurray, my [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking has been hung! Kinda forgot I made one... woopse.

Note to self - fill someone's (or several someones!) stocking tomorrow - even if there are no story ideas that jump out at you, there are always icons, wall papers, or regular run of the mill holiday greetings.

Friday, Dec 2 - Took Kristin along for a tree decorating party at JB's. We put geeky ornaments on his Christmas tree and had the Star Wars Holiday Special on in the background. I didn't notice much about it (thankfully) beyond the singing at the end and Cartoon Han's penis shaped head, and instead spent the entire time eating junk food and jabbering with fellow geeks.

Sunday, Dec 4 - Madgical Dinner at the high school courtesy of Kristin's mother. Soup was good, bread was *really* good, and I ate most of my stuffed pork chop even though I am neither a fan of pork chops nor stuffing, but it was still kind of nice to dress up. And wear my hooker boots. ;) Singing was pretty good, too - only about half the Mads were strong singers this year, but the choirs all did amazing, and the Mads were pretty good in and of themselves.

9 days of Thanksgiving

* Saturday, Nov. 19 - Monday, Nov. 21 - let myself be convinced to go spend the weekend up in the wilds of the Northwoods without any running water or - at least on our side of the cabin - central heat with my friend Ethan and some of his family. It was kind of nice in it's own way; super pretty up there with the snow that started falling pretty thickly just after we arrived, and hey, who am I to protest the chance to spend the entire weekend reading guilt-free. It was very cold, however, and the sauna they use to clean up and bucket-shower was swarming with flies, which isn't fun when you're wet and naked. On the bright side, at least I didn't have to go four days without washing my hair like I did when we went up camping on Mt. Ranier.

* Tuesday - didn't do much as I was rather exhausted after three days without sleep (don't sleep - or eat much, come to think of it - well when I travel), though I did go into work for a Water Aerobics drop-in class in the evening. With the YMCA not running any programs this past week due to Thanksgiving, I figured I could use every bit of extra on my paycheck I could possibly manage.

* Wednesday - bit of cleaning, and then I took Buddy to the Marshfield dog park, and was pleased to discover he seemed to get on well with the other dogs. Kind of shy and came running back to me to "hide" pretty often, and he was drooling so much he looked a bit rabid, but no barking, growling or snapping from him or the other dogs, hurray! Might try and do it again soonish - the poor boy loves to play, but we're never around to play with him.

* Thursday, Nov. 24 - TURKEY DAY! - Rode down to Ripon with my parents and my brother Ben to have Thanksgiving Dinner with a good chunk of Mom's side of the family. Had dinner at a catering place owned by a high school friend of Mom's instead of Gramma M going crazy trying to have it at their place again. Ate entirely too much (but less than I usually do at these sort of things) and caught up a bit with aunts, uncles, and cousins.

* Friday - cleaning like a mad cleaning thing, getting ready to host about a two-thirds of my dad's family for that side's Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday.

* Saturday, Nov. 26 - Dad and I were crazy busy in the morning trying to get everything cooked (I was charged with the green bean casserole, twice-baked potatoes, fruit salad, and getting the munchies set to go since we would be eating so late while Dad mostly focused on the cleaning and the sweet potatoes) and all the last minute cleaning accomplished before his oldest sister and her family arrived at around 12:30. Mom finished up the few work things she had and brought Gramma home with her around 1:30 pm and we were able to sit down to a late dinner by about 2:30. Caught up with cousins, ate too much again, and spent the rest of the evening watching movies (Tron: Legacy is awesome) and playing on my computer before crashing at 8:45ish because I was Just That Tired. Of course then I tossed and turned from 10pm to 1 or 2am because of my sorta nap beforehand, but such is life.

* Sunday, Nov. 27 (Today) - did two loads of laundry, otherwise? A whole lot of nothing. Watched another movie (The Tourist with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, where I totally spoiler ), but it was still fun and I'd watch it again and hey, who am I to turn down two such pretty, pretty people together on one screen?

Back to work tomorrow, alas, but I'm very sure my bank account will thank me. Speaking of bank accounts, note to self - You WILL go on another job-applying spree tomorrow afternoon before work. We really, really DO NOT NEED to go any further into debt than we already are.

Facebook is stealing what I would otherwise spam on LJ.

So - in brief - an update

* Friday, Nov 11 - spent a good chunk of the day driving around with Dad. He had a meeting with a guy who hit it rather big in the Ethanol sales in the early-to-mid 2000s... and then he got Too Big, and government types (not just senators and the like, we're talking DNR and Forestry Department, even the DOT) did everything they possibly could to bury him. Depressing to hear, but informative and now hopefully we can learn from his mistakes and wiggle around some of the confinements on Ethanol production. We're also never going to "go big", which is hopeful because everyone pretty much left him along until he started making too much money.

* Saturday, Nov 12 - while playing with the dog, Buddy managed to jab a stick into my right eye. It was red and gunky and irritating the rest of the weekend, which pretty much killed my motivation to do anything else. On the bright side, it was almost totally better by Monday, and generally back to normal yesterday, so hurray for the healing power of the ocular orbs!

* This coming weekend, Nov 18-21 - fair to middling chance I'll be heading up nort' to do some camping with a friend of mine. Bright side - his family owns a rustic cabin in Nicolet National Forest, complete with wood stoves and bunk-beds. Down side - no electric or running water, so my hair is going to be driving me nuts. I predict lots of braided pigtails and hats in my future.

Thanksgiving comes first

Like last year, I am going to try and post something I am thankful for as many days as possible this month, because there's this rather special holiday that comes between Halloween and Christmas that so many people seem to forget about in the Holiday Rush - Thanksgiving.

Today I am thankful for my comfy bed and an abundance of tissues. I might not be getting the cold I thought I was (or if I am, it is taking it's own sweet time to manifest as anything more than fatigue), I would bet money that before the Winter has passed I shall be in need of such little comforts at least twice.

ETA 11/12 - though I haven't posted every day, I have posted several thankfulnesses on Facebook - so, you know, not ignoring my goal.

11/5 - Today I am thankful for tasty soup from Charcoal Grill, lunch with friends, and the opportunity to spend more than an hour and a half in a craft shop. I am now prepared for Holiday Ornament Frenzy 2011!

11/4 - Today I am thankful for Ruff Hewn. Ruff Hewn, you are my hero! At least a fashionably "rugged" clothing brand that actually fits us broad-shouldered, busty babes! I can wear a shirt that is *in my size* and not two sizes bigger and have it fit and be comfortable! \o/

Tennessee and Halloween

* Last weekend (Oct 20-23) I was down in Tennessee for a very whirlwind tour of the Smoky Mountains. Gramma wanted to visit her sister Jean down there, so I was sent along as the adult supervision. As it was 40 and rainy up here and 65 and sunny down there... golly, they twisted my arm and I had to go or risk disappointing the Matriarch. No one wants to disappoint the Matriarch, right? ;) Awesome time seeing family I hadn't in years (and meeting a few of them for the first time), and bonus - they kept buying me food, too! Took a ton of pictures as it was peak fall color in the mountains and I even saw a bear.

* Saturday (Oct 29) was Halloween Shanagins in Point, but I didn't go because driving an hour in the dark to go bar hopping just didn't seem worth the effort. Kinda bummed i missed out on hanging with my Point friends (in costume, too), but it was kinda nice to just relax and chill and catch a movie with Kristin in Marshfield instead. For the record, Paranormal Activity 2 was a HUGE LET DOWN after all the hype I heard, but it had a few nice shocker moments.

* Yesterday (Halloween) I dressed as Marty from Back to the Future III and went to work. Nothing else going on, i just wanted to wear a costume. :D

And that is the extent of the excitement in my life the last two weeks.

Awesome Creepypasta - Encyclopedia Dramatica

This year I didn't do my traditional Score The Internets For Good Ghost Stories post before Halloween. So I am stealing Becca's link for creepiness.

First few are ones I've heard before, but I still got chills. Possibly because I might be coming down with cold, but whatever, still counts. Who fans should check out "The Statue" about a third of the way down the page.
